How to Avoid Wasting Your Years as a Missionary

As we consider Bevin’s challenge to us Mark Anderson is asked the question, “How to we avoid wasting our years as a missionary?” …

That message from Mark Anderson is one of many messages from YWAM Kansas City’s YouTube Channel.

YWAM South Sudan

I’ve been updating you through the years with the work that YWAM has been doing in South Sudan. Back in September 2016 the civil war degenerated so far that the YWAM Centre in … had to be evacuated.

This month the YWAM missionaries were able to return to their centre in Yei and see how much damage was done to their centre and the community around it. Many of the homes, as well as the primary school, have been completely stripped out, and other building have been set on fire.

They are asking God for wisdom for how to move forward and rebuild, and are asking that we would join with them in praying about what the future holds for the ministry there.

Mae-la preschools under threat of closure

Mae-la camp is a refuge camp located in Thailand on the Burmese border. It is home to about 60,000 mostly Karen refugees from Burma. At the camp there are thousands of children, and last year there were 17 pre-schools at the camp. The preschools provide a preschool education as well as a nutritional supplements program that is essential for these children to thrive.

As of this year all large Non-Government organisations have ceased, and has put all of these pre-schools at risk of closing. These closures will not only take away the only early childhood educational foundations available to thousands of children in Mae-la camp but will also destroy the front line where basic health and learning difficulties are picked up and a safe place for women who are experiencing stress in their relationships is taken away.

Australian Mercy, a ministry of Youth With A Mission, and a couple of other smaller NGOs are trying to hold the line but at the present time their resources are not anywhere big enough to fund all 17 preschools.

At the moment, Australian Mercy funds one preschool and a teacher training program that is shared by all the other preschools. They also fund a nutritional supplements program that provides extra food to families and children who are at risk of malnutrition.

They are currently seeking to raise an additional $20,000 per year to help fund four additional pre-schools, and for every $7000 above that they can fund one more school.

You can visit the Australian Mercy web-site to see how you or your group could help, australianmercy.org.

Haiti

Since the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 they nation has struggled to recover. Whether from outbreaks of infectious disease like Cholera, corruption, violence, and multiple hurricanes, they have been working to build back as a nation.

As a ministry during this time Youth With A Mission has endeavoured to serve the wonderful people of Haiti through multiple ministry, and many locations around the country. This includes the latest launch, after 10 years of planning, praying, and preparing, of YWAM Port of Peace.

YWAM Port of Prince was birthed out of another YWAM Location in Saint Mark and they are excited to see how God leads them, and what he has in store for them as the prepare their new campus to receive guests.

Meanwhile YWAM Les Cayes Haiti is continuing with their building project to help facilitate future training and staff.

God really is moving in the nation of Haiti, and providing for the ministry there, as we hear from this YWAM Cap-Haiti update:

MV YWAM PNG Returns to Papua New Guinea

After spending much of 2020 docked in their home port of Townsville, Australia, the MV YWAM PNG last week returned to Papua New Guinea after being invited back for the purpose of strengthening the delivery of essential healthcare to rural communities in PNG.

Ken Mulligan, YWAM Medical Ships Australia Managing Director has stated that:

“While the COVID situation is continually evolving, we plan to have the vessel in a state of readiness to respond flexibly in 2021 as circumstances evolve. The ship will initially dock in Port Moresby, with plans now underway to resume rural healthcare patrols to Western Province,”.

YWAM MS also has a number of new land-based ventures underway for 2021 that will help strengthen the sister city relationship between Townsville and Port Moresby.

“As a registered training organisation here in Townsville, it has been a dream for a long time to establish a satellite vocational training campus for young people in Port Moresby. I’m pleased to share that we are in the process of establishing a vibrant campus there at the moment that will combine vocational training with character development and service opportunities.

“Approximately 90% of Port Moresby’s young people are unemployed. Our desire is to work in collaboration with PNG to help provide the skills, knowledge and innovation needed for PNG’s sustainable development.

“We also recently acquired a fitted out dental and medical semi-trailer. We are actively working toward bringing the trailer into Port Moresby for the purpose of providing dental services, training opportunities, and health education to schools throughout the city,” said Mr Mulligan.
